Of Flowers and Fear

Iris are the flower du jour
around here!
 It's as though someone (Someone?)
gave the order and voila!
I'm not sure why or how their beauty exists in my thoughts
right along with a few thoughts about fear...
Suffice it to say, that my thinking on the subject of fear these days
can be summed up in this statement
that is subject to change, by the way...
Fear does NOT equal caution NOR  uncertainty.
I'm not trying to justify my emotions
or response to the current challenges--
simply to understand and clarify them.
Right now, I DO feel both caution and uncertainty.
Not necessarily fear.
Does that make sense?

Because You Ask Not

"You have not because you ask not."  James 4:2

It's frequently true in prayer,
and it's often true in marriage.
Well into our 49th year of marriage, I expressed my
frustration at "always" having to turn my husband's stockings
right side out when taking them out of the dryer.
Without a word, he started turning them
right side out before he put them into the laundry basket!
What a difference it makes in folding the laundry!
WHY didn't I ask long ago?!?

Even Behind Closed Doors

the first easter
no crowds gathered
nor cameras
but one by one
or two or three
he met them
where they were
even behind closed doors
Christ alone, alive

Pottery-loving People

On Fridays, I drive a friend to her hair appointment.
The salon is just up the street from one of my favorite thrift stores.
Yesterday, realizing I had very little cash in my billfold,
I almost read a magazine instead of checking out the shop.
I'm glad I went anyway.
I found this mug and spent twenty-seven cents for it!
"I have a hard time passing up pottery at bargain prices,"
I wrote on my Facebook page this morning.
Soon, comments were added to my post.
"Earthy, natural beauty."
"...something so 'real' about pottery."
'Midst the stream, I noted,
"It's interesting how pottery-loving people find each other!"
***
I'm thinking it's similar to genuine Christ-followers
and how they "find" each other...

Christmas is not a Mood

Me, texting a friend:  "Good morning, Gail!  Happy Christmas Eve Eve!
Friend, responding:    "Good morning, Rebecca!  Sounds like you're in the MOOD!"
Me, texting back:       "Not one bit!  Thankful that 'Christmas' is not a mood!"

(To be continued...)

Fading Fast

The tree in our front yard which only a couple of days ago
was vibrant in its fall splendor,
faded quickly as rain and winds took their toll on its beauty.
***
I thought of it as I bantered with a friend who'd joined us
for Sunday dinner at a local restaurant.
"Tell me I don't look any older than when we met ten years ago,"
I begged.
He was a good sport.
He knew and I knew that years take their toll on our outward appearance.
No wonder, the Bible has frequent reminders about beauty.
My ESV Bible says, "let your adorning be the hidden person
of the heart with the imperishable  (unfading) beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit,
which in God's sight is very precious".
 And Proverbs 31:30,
"Charm is deceptive and beauty is fleeting..."
***
Particularly, in this season of my life, I'm thankful for the truth of the Word of God
and godly examples of unfading beauty,
Though outwardly I am fading fast,
inwardly I am being renewed day by day by day.
2 Corinthians 4:16

Sometimes I Hide...

Sometimes I hide
sadness
failures
talent
wit
desires
preferences
plans
faults
fears
dreams
hopes
frustrations
knowledge
pain
emotions
loneliness
pleasures
failures
thoughts
smiles
tears
doubts
Sometimes I hide
but not very well.

Domestic Monastery

It arrived today, and by late afternoon I had read it!  Short and packed.
Excellent in STYLE.  Encouraging in SUBSTANCE.
Style-wise, author Ronald Rolheiser writes gently.
I found myself underlining softly,
writing faint notes in the columns--
whispering as it were in response to the firm, quiet wisdom contained on the pages.
Style-wise, the illustrations were also quiet.
Plenteous.  Well-placed.  Reverent.
Style-wise, Rolheiser skillfully strings together phrases for optimum impact.
For instance:  "Monastic prayer is simple, often rote, has a clear durational expectancy, and is structured to allow each monk the freedom to invest himself or hold back, in terms of energy and heart, depending upon his disposition on a given day." p. 43
Style-wise, the author chooses excellent illustrations for clarity.
These include the piano keyboard and a woman who visits her elderly mother in a nursing home.

And what can I say about substance?
Whether a faithful young mother or an aging reader such as I,
here is an invitation to monastery
("a place set apart, period...a place to learn the value of powerlessness
and a place to learn that time is not ours, but God's.") p 18
While I read all ten chapters with interest, those dealing with prayer,
time, the tensions of life, and the seasons of life
were the four most challenging to me in this initial reading.
Ritual, rhythm, and routine are explained and recommended as essential
to the sane, simple, and sacred life I desire.
I WILL be reading it again.

Coffee, Me, and Thee

Maybe it's just me.
Maybe I'm just "old-school".
The coupling of coffee and church,
latte and the Lord,
is starting to trouble me.
"We have the coffee, now we just need you
#midweek in the house!!! Tonight @  7 pm"
read a recent announcement..
Okaaaaaaaaaaaay?!?
The Perk,
Higher Grounds,
Common Ground,
HeBrews,
Connection Cafe,
you name it.
Personally, it leaves me cold.
And I like my coffee hot.
Sigh.
"Get with the program," I tell myself.

Lest I Forget...

It was just a little over a 24-hour getaway,
but oh, the delight!
Three friends at a lake cottage!
(This was the sunrise...)
We played Qwirkle...
we talked.
We visited a thrift store where I found these two treasure...
The book is a Bible study I wrote years ago.
One of the friends gave me the Sister Wendy book.
At home, it now sits next to my recliner with an older book of saints.
I even returned home with two dozen farm fresh eggs!
Simple, delicious meals,
a surprise meetup with friends from long ago,
and personal quiet time from 4:00-7:30 in the morning
were all parts of a wonderful, much-needed respite.
Thanks, Betty!

on John 2:4

Our neighbor contributed this ball to our flower bed!
"My hour has not yet come."
His words oft puzzle me
until I meet disappointment
or look on wistfully...
While others find their pleasures now,
I trust His perfect timing.
My preconceived ideas of pleasure
He's gently redefining.
I still don't know completely--
in this life never will!
But I am waiting, hoping, trusting,
and willing to be still.

(Written this morning after postponing an anticipated "pleasure")

Warriors of God

I'm sure our fine library had to send someone
deep into the stacks to find this book for me--
but what a treasure!
After reading an essay (also by Walter Nigg) about St. Francis of Assisi,
I began reading THIS book.
I wish I owned it!
I would be underlining and making other comments and marks
in its margins.
Quotes such as these challenge me from the chapter about the first "warrior"--St. Anthony.
"A pandering to the crowd spells mortal danger to Christianity;
Anthony pointed to the remedy.  I a Christianity of the crowd there ceases to be
any genuine relationship between God and the soul,
which, if it is to be real, must be personal."
And..
"The flight of the hermits in the age of Constantine was a movement
from the outward to the inward, a preserving of the content of religion
from the canker of superficiality,
a withdrawal from futility into the center of being."

What book(s) do YOU wish you owned?
And why?

Give Thanks

Why NOT?  Thanks to Brenda at Cozy Little House for the idea of using rubber stamps as part of the decorating scheme.  I'm not--and never have been--a stamper, but I have a few stamps that I've used for place cards or package decorating during the holidays.  I think these two look charming on the shelves of my old step-back cabinet.

More important than how they LOOK is the reminder they are to me to ♥GIVE THANKS with a GRATEFUL HEART♥

I Chronicles 29
11 Yours, LORD, is the greatness and the power
and the glory and the majesty and the splendor,
for everything in heaven and earth is yours.
Yours, LORD, is the kingdom;
you are exalted as head over all.
12 Wealth and honor come from you;
you are the ruler of all things.
In your hands are strength and power
to exalt and give strength to all.
13 Now, our God, we give you thanks,
   and praise your glorious name.

Power

As I traveled through the plains of Illinois yesterday, I was awestruck by the size and number of these giant wind "mills"!   I took THIS picture out of the car window.  If size and numbers matter, there ought to be a lot of power generated on this plain.  I pulled over several miles down the road and took the picture below.  The sun was at a different angle, so the color is different...
Our sermon Sunday was on the Holy Spirit.  Our songs were of His power.  As I saw these wind turbines, I couldn't but help to think of God's power...a power I long to experience more and more...the power Paul prayed that we would know and experience:  I also pray that you will understand the incredible greatness of God’s power for us who believe him. This is the same mighty power  that raised Christ from the dead and seated him in the place of honor at God’s right hand in the heavenly realms. Ephesians 1:19-20 (New Living Translation)
Teach Me To Pray, Lord
   1.Teach me to pray, Lord, teach me to pray;
This is my heart-cry, day unto day.
I long to know Thy will and Thy way;
Teach me to pray, Lord, teach me to pray.

2. Power in prayer, Lord, power in prayer!
Here 'mid earth's sin and sorrow and care,
Men lost and dying, souls in despair,
O give me power, power in prayer!

3. My weakened will, Lord, thou canst renew;
My sinful nature Thou canst subdue.
Fill me just now with power anew,
Power to pray and power to do!

4. Teach me to pray, Lord, teach me to pray;
Thou art my pattern day unto day.
Thou art my surety, now and for aye;
Teach me to pray, Lord, teach me to pray.

Refrain:  Living in Thee, Lord, and Thou in me,
Constant abiding, this is my plea;
Grant me Thy power, boundless and free,
Power with men and power with Thee.

Here I Am To Worship

The love of God is like the ocean, you can see its beginnings but not its end.
"Here I Am To Worship"

Light of the World, You stepped down into darkness;
Opened my eyes let me see
Beauty that made this heart adore You--
Hope of a life spent with You.
King of all Days,
Oh so highly exalted; glorious in heaven above,
Humbly You came to the earth You created--
All for love's sake became poor.

And here I am to worship,
Here I am to bow down.
Here I am to say that You're my God.
You're altogether lovely;
Altogether worthy;
Altogether wonderful to me.
(A Chris Tomlin song)
