The Porch is Imperative!

Our porch is very generic.  Nothing particularly beautiful -
and CERTAINLY not designed with the skill of gardeners or decorators.
However, this morning in the storm's aftermath, I recalled the words
I'd read in the book I just completed, An Altar in the World.
"In the eyes of the world, there is no payoff for sitting on the porch...(but)
In the eys of the true God, the porch is imperative--not every now and then
but on a regular basis."
My suitcase is packed this Monday morning.
I'll be overnighting at my friend's lake cottage.
It will be my "porch"--in fact, I'll probably SLEEP on its porch
as has been my pleasure annually.
"The Practice of Saying No" is the chapter title in which
Barbara Brown Taylor addresses the vital practice of Sabbath.
I look forward to its experience today!

Remember the Sabbath Day by keeping it holy.  Exodus 20:8

  2. It seems as if Arizona has lost the concept of having porches. We do, however, have lovely patios. During the months of July and August, is it much too hot to sit outside for very long, unless you have an overhead misting system. I love the early morning hours on the patio.

Enjoy sleeping on the porch. It sounds divine!

    1. Oh, a patio will fill the same role! (And I'm back and had a wonderful night sleeping on the porch.)

  5. Yes, the porch is imperative. The book you shared is interesting. I hope I can find a copy of it so I can also read it. Love the pics of your porch, Rebecca...

  6. I too love porches! I try to sit on my porch every day, if possible! My parents had a huge screened in porch when I was growing up. I loved to sleep out there on the glider on summer nights. A giant honeysuckle vine clung to the west screens and the scent wafted in making it all the more pleasant. From the glider you could stare up at the stars through the screens on the opposite side. I've often longed for a porch like that again!

  7. I miss having a porch. Our current house is porchless. I read and enjoyed Barbara's book, too. I'm doing better at the "no" but have a ways to go! Praying for you surgery.
