Life--NOT Godliness

Found a few weeks ago at My Favorite Thrift Store.
WHO knew? (I suppose ALL of you youngsters!) I just learned this very morning that it is no longer considered proper to leave two spaces following end-sentence-punctuation. One space is now all that's necessary. I have been practicing the two space rule from the time I learned typing in a high school typing class.  It has been reinforced by countless term paper writings and various contract writing assignments I've had throughout the years.

This is going to be a VERY difficult habit to break. It's FAR worse than writing "2012" instead of "2011" the first few weeks of the new year.

For anyone who doubts as I did, you can google it and find out the rationale. I'm just sorry I didn't learn about this sooner. Imagine all the spaces I could have saved...

I'm classifying this as a matter of life. NOT godliness!
What ELSE have I missed?
Your help will be much appreciated.

  1. Rebecca, I had NO idea either! At this point, I'm not even sure that I am willing to try to change this long-ingrained habit.
To answer your question "What else have I missed?"...I have no idea about that either, because I miss a lot. In my own little world, I suppose. Sigh...
Your snow pictures were beautiful...and I love the old hymn that you chose to accompany them. Oh, I do SO love the old hymns! Weekend blessings to you...

P.S. I have had difficulty commenting...getting a white screen when I do. Hopefully this will go through. By any chance, are you using the new blogger interface?

    1. I've done nothing differently blog-wise (that I know of), Cheryl. I'm not sure how/when I started getting this "reply/delete" feature in my comment section though. Wonder if that's related to the trouble some people are having. Wonder how many others are having difficulty getting through....

    2. Rebecca, I don't know...I am so technologically-challenged! But I have been unable to return to the comment section without a big white screen...until just now (tried several times yesterday). I only have heard that the new "reply/delete" feature is giving some trouble on other blogs, and so I just wondered. It is all a mystery to me. :-)

  2. The reason that changed is because of the advancement to computers from typewriters. If those two spaces came at the end of a line at just the right spot, one of those spaces were at the end of the previous line but then the next line would start with a space making the left margin uneven. Now you know the rest of the story--- . Where have I heard that before? Paul Harvey, the great.

  3. I'm not sure I like all this new stuff. Texting & Twitter have wrecked havoc with the rules of English composition. The thing that I dislike most is how many people no longer capitalize anything. Sentences just seem to run together.

I think I'll rebel and continue putting two spaces between sentences.

Ah, progress ... if that's what it is.

    Blessings,
    Kathleen

    1. I've been guilty of that capitalization thing now and then (like in my "thrifty blog" LOL). Do you remember e.e.cummings (the poet of "our" generation)?

  4. I had not the slightest clue either.:) I don't think I'll change though. Two spaces please me more than one does.:)

  5. I STILL do the two spaces too! Old habits are hard to break, but I notice the computer corrects it for me most times anyway. I have FINALLY stopped indenting for a new paragraph though and just skip an extra line instead! So I guess you can teach an old dog a few new tricks!

The thing I can't get used to at all is the shortened computer language and abbreviations! The kids think I'm nuts when I type "hahahahahahahahahahahaha!" if I think something is really funny instead of typing "lol" ~ I tell them that I think my "ha-ha's" make more of a statement!

    Blessed Sunday!
    Love and Prayers,
    Eileen

  6. I actually only found out recently too. Oh well. I think we can do whatever we want these days.
I have readers telling me they can't comment on my blog either. I can get no satisfaction when trying to get answers about it.

  7. Most days I am lucky to have two thoughts that relate to one another. My typing skills are non-existent and I have forgotten all grammatical and punctuation rules. I can't care. Two spaces or none, I won't notice. It is your content I adore.

  8. I had no clue, and since I didn't notice before, I probably won't next time. ~smile, I am here for your content, which is always so rich, thanks for sharing.

  9. I wish I could tell you what else you may be missing, but I'm probably missing it too. . . . ... .

  10. Your blog info was news to me! (And I just automatically added the double spacing after that sentence, but went back and deleted one.) Change, like using Google Chrome is often difficult for me, so maybe I will change to the one space and then maybe I won't. What I need to learn to control are my ellipses.................... I have so very many unfinished thoughts. Grammar, punctuation, new dogs old tricks vs. old dogs with new tricks.<>

It is all about content, and that is why I visit.

  11. Mmm, well. I have always thought that two spaces looked better myself. I usually do one space for comments to save time but two spaces for posting because I think it looks better, silly me!!!!!
I say use as many spaces as you like, we'll still all read your posts! Love Ya! Di ♥

  12. I knew... but that's only because of my recent work with publication. It doesn't take long to break, and really, who cares if you do?
