Hall of Mirrors or Display of Majesty?

John Piper writes, "Our happiest moments have not been self-saturated moments, but self--forgetful moments. There have been times when we stood beside the Grand Canyon, or at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro, or viewed a stunning sunset over the Sahara, and for a fleeting moment felt the joy of sheer wonder. This is what we were made for. Paradise will not be a hall of mirrors. It will be a display of majesty. And it won't be ours."

"Christ is the most majestic reality in the universe...making much of us would not satisfy our souls. We were made for something greater. If we are to be as happy as we can be, we must see and savor the most glorious person of all, Jesus Christ himself." (Piper, The Passion of Jesus Christ, 2004)

These are just a few of the mirrors in our house. (It is not easy--taking pictures of mirrors with my cell phone camera!) I LOVE mirrors. But life and mirrors are not about "me"! I was made for something greater...to see and savor the most glorious person of all, Jesus Christ himself-- AND to reflect and share HIS glory with others!

  1. Interestingly enough, this fits with what i was studying this morning. I'm teaching my s.S. class next Sunday; the topic is the call to the life of discipleship. Basically, what I've figured out so far is that true discipleship is loving as Jesus loved, and allowing Him to control our lives--basically reflecting His glory to others. Imagine that!

  2. How incredible...so many mirrors and you did such a good job of not getting yourself in any of them. Love the fact that you have every type of mirror frame...so interesting. This post is a great analogy of how we should be, so you took the ordinary and made it extraordinary, Rebecca!

    blessings and hugs,

  4. Donna, that IS awesome and so like Him - to call our attention to truths He is trying to impart. Marcy, I tried not to appear in my mirror shots. And I couldn't use all my mirror pictures because they reflected so much JUNK! I didn't realize it until I went to edit and post them. (That's another whole post topic!) Amy, it IS all about Him.

  5. I, too, have a great deal of mirrors all over the cottage. They provide light and make a room look larger that it is...but I too, tend to think of mirrors as a way of constantly showing me what I am at the moment, and I begin to focus too much on how I look and become quite distracted.

Now, I just look in the mirror as if it was a picture on the wall, one to be admired but not too linger, since the image changes constantly!

    Great post dear friend,

  6. Rebecca, your mirrors are beautiful...I think I see a mirror in some of the mirrors :)
I cheat on ckaes sometimes Rebecca...it was a Betty Crocker triple choc. mix...less 2 Tb. of water plus 2 Tb.extra of oil. Makes the cake more dense like homemade...frosted with BC chocolate...and I had some vanilla frosting already opened...I blended van. and choc. for the creme center...then just smothered it in chopped pecans on the side and heath bars on top...plus the dripped it with some chocolate.

I also don't cool completely...almost but not quite before I frost...keeps in more moisture.
I have a wonderful homemade recipe...but this mix is almost as good.

  7. Really nice post, Rebecca. I was just thinking this same thing at the beach today! There's nothing prettier than God's decorating!

But I do like all your mirrors! I don't think I have one mirror that hangs on the wall like that in my house, all my mirrors are either attached to dressers or medicine cabinets, and one is an armoire (spelling?) door. Yours are all so pretty!
Oh, wait, I thought of one I have, it's a small one hanging in our foyer.
Mirrors do really open up a room. And I had to laugh at you about the 'junk'! I'm the same way! I just don't see it until I look at pictures I've taken! Sometimes I just give up and post them anyway!
