Fire and Flood

SO aware of what I was spared yesterday!
I really don't light candles very much, but yesterday morning I did.
We're early risers.  I estimate I lit this candle around 5:00 a.m.
At 6:30 I was out the door and on my way to get to the nursing home
where my mother resides in time to be there when the doctor made his rounds.
(You probably can guess where this post is headed!)
I returned home around 12:45 p.m.
Sinking into my recliner AFTER wiping up the kitchen floor
because I hadn't checked the seal on the dishwasher that I turned on as I left the house,
I looked across the room and saw this candle--still burning.
I share the photos (dust and all) to first of all acknowledge the protection of my Heavenly Father,
and secondly to remind YOU to blow out those candles!
(Personally, I may not light another one for a long while.)

  1. Oh my friend, He was certainly keeping your home safe from harm. Have you thought of getting those battery operated candles? They look quite real and are much safer :0) mari

    1. Yes, I've thought of it......but they're just not the same. Until I'm less distracted, I think I'll just not light them - or else set a timer or something as a reminder.......

  2. Thanks be to God for His watching over you.

I do light candles that are in jars. I enjoy their scents, and do try to make sure all candles, lights, stove, etc. are turned OFF or blown OUT when I leave the house for any length of time.

    1. I enjoy the scents, too.....
Like I told Mari, if I DO light one again, I'll put the timer on or something to remind me to check if I am planning to leave the house.

  5. I have a little dishwasher story. A friend of mine turned her dishwasher on just before she left for a day of Christmas shopping. When she got home, the dishwasher was still on and pumping water all over the room. The kitchen floor had to be replaced as well as the ceiling in the finished basement underneath..and the carpeting and flooring down there as well as some furniture.
I never leave the house with the dishwasher on...or even go to bed.
I enjoy the jar candles too and have some that are battery operated on my shelves. I guess we must make changes as we age. Goodness....years ago they burned candles on live trees. I wonder how many fires started that way. I suppose they just burned them for a short time.
    Have a lovely day....Balisha

  7. Oh my. We had a similar thing happen. We had a power outage a few weeks ago, my grandson wanted to go potty but not in the dark, so I lit two candles in the bathroom so he could see. My daughter arrived shortly after and we ran to the store, leaving my husband at home and hoping the power would be on when we returned. The candles continued to burn in the bathroom. Dave went into the garage to check out the generator as the power had been out for a few hours, he messed with the generator for a bit, got it running and plugged in a few things and came back into the house. The house was filled with smoke, the smoke alarms were going off and flames were shooting out of one of the candles nearly two feet into the air. No power, no running water, luckily there was dish water in the sink and Dave raced back and forth dousing the flames and put everything out. Then he opened all the windows in the house, smoke was everywhere. To say we were freaked out doesn't even begin to tell it. If Dave had remained outside much longer we might have had a very different outcome.

SO LADIES - NEVER, EVER, NEVER EVER, NEVER leave candles burning unattended. It just isn't worth the risk.

    1. It can happen so innocently.....just a slight distraction, etc. I'm so happy to hear YOUR experience didn't turn out worse! How frightening.

  8. I just want to add the candle that did this was the kind that has things in the wax to look pretty, it had a cinnamon stick and some other bits and bobs and these are what caught on fire.

  9. I have candles in the fireplace ONLY! I also purchased some of those religious candles in the tall, glasses - only these don't have any pix on them, they are just plain. They also are in the fireplace with those on the metal candle stand! Nonetheless, thanks be to God that nothing more serious happened in your home and the kitchen clean up was fairly simple, not to forget your recent knee replacement.

I recoil in my spirit to hear about homes that burn down with families also consumed in the flames. Most recent was the jet that crashed into a home and a mother, her two young children, as well as three on board were all killed. They found the mother and children all in the bathroom, in the tub where the mother was trying to shield them. I tear up just writing this...
