Good Reads

After reading Brenda's review of this book, I found it available in our library.  I began reading it and quickly began reading passages out loud to my husband.  End result?  I ended up reading it while we shared the front seat of our car during the Memorial Day weekend and finished it (aloud) last night.

It is an inspiring book at many levels.  In some ways it reminded me of the classic, Pilgrim's Progress.   I found myself trying to make various parts of it allegorical.  Forcing that didn't work all the time though...

It was a story about love, marriage, sadness, humanity, courage, wild flowers, nature, and England.  All at the same time.

It was a good read.

Memorial Day took us to our sons' home.  I left with a thankful heart AND a couple of books .  I began to read this one but after reading only a couple of entries, I texted him to see if he woud mind if I mark in it.  Then I asked if I might possibly purchase it from him.

Miss O'Conner's prayer journal (written when she was only 21 or 22), expresses many of the spiritual passions and agonizing desires of my own 65-year-old heart.

I can only read it slowly.  Sentence by sentence.  Sometimes only one word before pausing.  Marveling.  Praying.  Crying.  Yearning.

A unique feature of this book is that there are pages of the journal in Flannery O'Connor's own handwriting at the end.

Though a short book, I haven't finished it yet.  I may NEVER finish it...

It's good to be reading again.  For awhile it had been difficult to pick up a book and read.  I seemed to have no stomach for it.  I hope to find more worthy books--good reads.  (That term is so subjective, I know.  Still, I am open to suggestions.)

...Just a few photos from our Memorial Day...

  1. I have this book on my To Read List. Flannery O Conner...oh, she is so hard for me to read. Her books always deal with redemption of some sort, but in some I find it hard to find. It takes a guide book to help get through her work sometimes. I do find her life interesting though. I will add this title to my too I guess. Go to amazon and read a description of this book: Emily, Alone by Stewart O'Nan. It is novel...written by man...about a woman...I think you might enjoy this character.

  2. I'll look it up! Thanks. (This particular O'Conner book is short and just 1 page prayers. They ARE deep, though.)

  4. Rebecca, I held this book in my hands last evening and thought of you. I just knew you'd love it. The top book looks good, too. We leave tomorrow for Kansas City -- RB has a class there. I read to him, too, but textbooks! ha. I think this trip's book is The Drama of Doctrine.

  5. I prayed for you and thought of you as I walked the other morning. I kept looking up! You had posted on looking up!
I am reading Gift from the Sea by Anne Morrow Lindbergh and she seems to be voicing my own heart at this season of life. I am also enjoying Glimpse of Grace by Madeleine L'Engle. Their theology might not be mine in all points, but I am hearing God through their words.

    1. I think I've read Gift from the Sea just about once a year since I discovered it 20+ years ago, Janette! Not sure I've read Glimpse of Grace. Will have to look it up. I've enjoyed/been challenged by a few of L'Engle's books. Thanks for mentioning them - AND for praying for me! ♥

  6. I know this sounds strange since I work at a library, but I don't have too many to recommend since I have little time for reading. I like non-fiction, books about decorating, gardening, and Christian subjects when I do have a chance to sit down and browse through books. Happy reading!

    1. No. That actually doesn't seem strange at all to me. Especially given how busy you are :) I used to read SO much more. I'm a relatively fast reader, but lately if I can't get "into" a book at the outset, I lose interest. I thought I would have read so much more while side-lined by my hip replacement.......
