True Bread

Jesus answered them: “In all truth I tell you, it was not Moses who gave you bread from heaven,
it is my Father who gives you bread from heaven, the true bread;
for the bread of God is the bread which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.
I am the living bread which has come down from heaven.
Anyone who eats this bread will live for ever; and the bread that I shall give is my flesh,
for the life of the world.” John 6:32–33, 51

Together, Husband and I daily read and pray the Morning Office using this link.  This morning I detected a smile on the face of the Father as the above verses appeared in "A Reading".  You see, just before settling in my recliner to observe the Morning Office, I had layered the ingredients for a loaf of bread into our breadmaker!  If nothing else creative happens today, I will have "created" a loaf of bread (that is, if our electricity remains reliable for the entire three-hour-forty-minutes of baking time).

I use a recipe my sister-in-law gave me that includes buttermilk powder and oatmeal. (Do YOU use a breadmaker/have a favorite recipe?)
Snow covers our world.  I'm waiting for morning light
to see how the wind has rearranged it overnight.
An emergency order prohibits travel except for emergency vehicles until 6:00 this evening.
I was NOT one of the multitudes who effectively stripped
the grocery store shelves a couple of days ago.
We'll make do with what we have and feast on bread.
And Bread.

  1. Yes, we got 14 inches, it's -3 degrees and we too have the emergency road restrictions in effect! I hope to post a bit later on our experiences during the blizzard. Stay warm and cozy for the duration!

  2. Thank you for the link to the Morning Office! For awhile now I've been using The Common Book of Prayer (for Ordinary Radicals). I find a certain solace in liturgy, perhaps that is why I returned to my Methodist roots.

    1. Tamara, Only recently has that site been a wee bit unstable (as in blank a couple of mornings). It now seems to be OK. I did have to search out something else to use as a back-up a time or two. There is a "certain solace" there. I agree. It ties me in to the fellowship of saints over the centuries and links me in the present to a multitude of fellow pilgrims.

  3. Frank and I have talked about getting a bread maker but I am not sure we would use it often enough. Home made bread is the best...yum:)

    1. I seldom buy bread at the supermarket....We don't eat that much. But homemade is another story. Once made, we finish off a loaf within 3 days - usually 2 - most the first day! :)

  4. Good to hear you and safe and warm. Seeing the bread machine brings back memories. We used one a lot before we became gluten sensitive and removed all gluten from our diet. Nothing like the smell of freshly baked bread. I always thought the bread machine was "magic" creating those loaves for us. :)

  5. I use to have a bead maker...and I laughed on the shelves of the grocery store. Here in Texas if anyone says possibility of ice then the grocery stores are emptied, but this year we really did get iced in for days...the first time in my whole life!
    Now I am smelling bread...LOL
    Blessings to you, stay warm

  6. Just last night while sharing a birthday meal with my dad (along with my mom and two older boys), we piled some rolls onto our plates after a disappointing try at the hibachi buffet. "At least we have bread ..." - our collective mantra as the night wore on. We're bread eaters in our family, and there's a whole lot about that identity that will preach. Keep making bread, friend! and stay warm!!

  7. Hi Rebecca,
Yea, we love bread in our breadmaker too. I had found a pretty good gluten free bread at Wally World,
but haven't been able to find it again. Drats!!
Wow, you still have quite a bit of snow.........I read some real horror stories about tall that snow and
cold weather............sorry you have a bad cold, they can make you feel miserable, and yea, better
for your parents to miss you a bit than to catch that at their ages. You probably could use a lil
rest from running as well...........cause I know what that is like, even tho you want to go, the spirit is willing but the flesh is definitely weak and tired at times.........

Glad you have this good bread recipe, we are bread eaters too, I just love good bread, it is so
yummy...........but the best bread is in Heaven seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty.
What a blessing to know Him..........

You have a good week, and I will pray your cold goes away very quickly. If you have some B complex and Vit c, try taking that.......Dr. Don Colbert says that it helps boost your immune system, and I really think it does, cause I have tried it myself..........

Blessings for good Health really soon,
    Nellie

  8. I think I'm on my third breadmaker. With my fibro, it's impossible to knead--so I let the machine do my work. I don't bake in it--just do the dough. I make wheat bread and dinner rolls, Cherry rolls, cinnamon rolls and pecan sticky buns.
