My Love Language

Valentine's Day came and went.  The day before, my husband and I each enjoyed a piece of our favorite pie from The Diner - chocolate/peanut butter pie with whipped cream topping.  We called it "our Valentine celebration".  On the day itself, we both had responsibilities and chores to complete.  I was happy he agreed to pancakes and sausage for our mid-afternoon dinner.  When I went to make the pancakes however, there were bugs in the pancake mix!  Gross!  Soooooooo we went to Pizza Hut and followed that up with a few leisure hours at Barnes and Noble!  Spontaneous and unexciting by some standards, and nothing so out of the ordinary...but so "us".

I admit it.  As some people posted their glamorous gifts and exotic plans for celebrating the day, I wondered what was wrong with me.  Why do I rebel - yes, that's the word - "rebel" against the commercialization of something so basic and wonderful as love?

Recently one of my daughters mentioned her "love language".  She suggested I take a 30 question quiz on the internet to determine mine.  I struggled through the first 10 questions.  It was difficult for me to select my preferred method of receiving love in the options of at least six of them.  Neither of the two appealed to me.  I gave up.  (Maybe there IS something wrong with me.)

Today, my husband sprayed the green paint/primer on the second of two benches he created out an old wooden crib we found discarded curbside.  As I went out to photograph it, I realized I KNOW what my Love Language is!  Apparently my husband knows, too.

Now if I only knew what to call it....

  3. Well this Valentine's Day I celebrated God lifting me up out of the pit of despair....it was the most different Valentine's Day I can remember....it ended with my daughter coming to where I was working with roses...God gave me a personal hug...

I love this bench...he does such wonderful work and he sure knows how to love on you!
I have never taken that test either....I wonder what mine would say?

    1. In loving-kindness Jesus came,
My soul in mercy to reclaim,
And from the depths of sin and shame
      Through grace He lifted me.

      Refrain:
From sinking sand He lifted me,
      With tender hand He lifted me;
From shades of night to plains of light,
Oh, praise His Name, He lifted me!

(So many times, a comment calls forth an old hymn or gospel song form my memory bank. THIS time, your words reminded me of THIS one, Janette.)

  4. I think all true love has it's own language.... a look, a touch, a thought, a knowing. I love your color choice for the benches....and what a great idea to make benches from the crib..Garys creativity and craftsmanship is soaring.

  5. Love the bed-nches! And your sharing. =)
I have long been a proponent of the "FIVE LOVE Languages." They help me understand that the way I naturally express love (because it ministers to me) is NOT the way my loved one most readily receives it, because his is different.

Thanks so much for coming by my blog.
I'd like to be more faithful at posting but it seems so lonely over there, all by myself, when FB feels more like a party.
    Sending HUGS your way...

    1. :) Yes...and who doesn't love a party!?! How well you describe the difference between Facebook & Blogging--at least in "our" genre of blogging.

You're right about how our "love language" influences how we EXPRESS love. In fact, that's probably a reason I ought to pay a little more attention to this subject.

  6. The Expression of Giving and Receiving Love is so deeply Personal that I don't know that there is a right or a wrong way to do it... so long as it is done and one is Content with the outcome, it's all Good. The Man and I find Contentment and Joy in what many might consider mundane or quirky activities, but those are our Zen Moments that are Savored even if outsiders don't 'Get It' and would not find it to be as satisfying to their particular Style of Love and Romance. Thanks for coming by with an Uplifting Blog Visit... I could Feel the Love! And that is what counts for me... this Blog Community is such a Loving and Caring group!

  9. This was a really good post Rebecca. Your kind of Valentine's celebration sounds a lot like "us" ! I love the bench in progress...I saw an idea like that on Pinterest and hope to do something similar with our crib, which hopefully will be coming down for good in a couple of months! Gary reminds me a lot of my dad, who was always picking up great curb finds and restoring or repurposing them...

  10. I was able to spend parts of two days at Barnes and Noble while in Florida. Certainly nothing "unexciting" about it. I thought of you while I was there seeing all my favorite magazines and copying quotes from books, etc. I made RB a valentine dinner before we left. When I woke I found a note propped on a motel glass: Will you be my valentine XO. Better than any store bought card!
