Like a River Glorious

Our recent train ride took us across the "Mighty Mississip".
Wide and majestic, it was peaceful and lay quietly as far as my eye could see.

I've been learning some interesting things about the Mississippi River....like
  • Its depth ranges from less than 3' in Minnesota to 200' in New Orleans.
  • 60% of all North American birds (326 species) use the river's basin as their migratory flyway.
  • Its name comes from the Ojibwe Indian's name for it meaning Big River or Father of Waters.
  • 241 fish species occupy the river and its tributaries.
  • a raindrop falling into Lake Itasca would arrive at the Gulf of Mexico in about 90 days.
God's creation is amazing!
I couldn't help but think of the peace God promises those who know and follow His word.
In Isaiah, He compares that peace to a gentle RIVER...
"Oh, that you had listened to my commands!
Then you would have had peace flowing like a gentle river
and righteousness rolling over you like waves in the sea."  (Isaiah 48:18)

Frances Havergal wrote of it THIS way
in another of my many favorite songs...
Like a river glorious is God’s perfect peace,
Over all victorious, in its bright increase;
Perfect, yet it floweth fuller every day,
Perfect, yet it groweth deeper all the way.
Stayed upon Jehovah, hearts are fully blest
Finding, as He promised, perfect peace and rest.

(Incidentally, we crossed the gentle river to see our grandchildren
whom YOU can see at my other blog HERE.)

  1. Hi Rebecca,
So where are you going on your train ride? I must have missed it. As soon as I saw your post title
that song started running thru my mind....it is such a beautiful song packed with truth.
Hope you enjoy your trip where ever it takes you.

I woke up feeling hungry, so had to grab a lil something as I knew I wouldn't go back to sleep otherwise, so thought I would check out a few blogs since I am wide awake. Went to the chiropractor on Friday, and my saciriliac was out of place, and I have tendonitis and that is why I have had such a bad time sitting. He told me to keep taking ibuprophen for the next week
and then go from there. Since he realigned me
I am hopeful this will go away sooner, as I am already much better, Praise the Lord!! He said tendonitis usually takes between 6-8 weeks to go away, I am already 2 1/2 weeks in to it, so thought great another 6-8 weeks, at the time I heard about it, but am feeling more confident it want be that long.............praying so!!
It is nice to be able to sit at least for short times without being in excruciating pain. Oh the things we take for granted!! lol

    You have a great time,
    Blessings, Nellie

    1. Very nice. A river does not always mean peace to me, dark water stresses me. However, when we lived near the Mississippi, I did get hooked on its character and stories! Am eager to hear more about your train ride too. Happy Sunday.

    2. I DO understand that rivers don't always mean peace! However, on this particular day, THIS part of the Mississippi lay quietly as far as the eye could see!

  4. What peaceful photos... beautiful setting.

Isaiah holds quite a few of my favourite words... I think I'll be adding this one you share from chapter 48.... it's a keeper.

So lovely to stop in and say hi... too long I've been away.

Wishing you a celebration that nourishes on every level.

  7. I like that song.....I don't think it's in our church songbook. We go over the Mississippi River on our way to see our oldest daughter. I miss it most of the time because I have my eyes closed. I don't have a great love for tall bridges over any body of water.
