In MY Small Corner

My 10 cent garage sale candle...
Well over 100 years ago, Susan Warner wrote a song that I sang frequently as a child.  Jesus Bids Us Shine.
  1. Jesus bids us shine with a clear, pure* light,
    Like a little candle burning in the night;
    In this world of darkness, we must shine,
    You in your small corner, and I in mine.
  2. Jesus bids us shine, first of all for Him;
    Well He sees and knows it if our light is dim;
    He looks down from heaven, sees us shine,
    You in your small corner, and I in mine.
  3. Jesus bids us shine, then, for all around,
    Many kinds of darkness in this world abound:
    Sin, and want, and sorrow—we must shine,
    You in your small corner, and I in mine.
I thought of this song as I read a comment on facebook this morning.  Michael was writing to an acquaintance of mine who had emceed a band competition.  He wrote:  "Pat (Miller), thank you for your excellent emcee help this year.  You have this amazing ability to make bands feel as tall as mountains after they perform..."
I pray, "God, please give me this ability!
To make those around me feel 'as tall as mountains'!
To shine with a clear, pure* light in this world of darkness.
 In MY small corner.  Amen."
*Last week Randy Alcorn tweeted: "Purity is always smart; impurity is always stupid.
Not sometimes. Not usually. Always. There are no exceptions."

  3. Oh yes I well remember that old Sunday School song! I would like to think it is my life's theme song :) My corner is small, and I am ok with that! A truth that I've picked up somewhere along the way is this: Light always invades darkness, and not the other way around. So whenever and where ever we can shine Light, it impacts darkness.

  4. Hi Rebecca,
    I want to do the same, make people feel as tall as mountains when ever they're around me. Lovely song, I have never heard it before.
    Have a lovely Sunday.

  7. I used to teach this song to my little ones (I taught Kindergarten many years ago)... and they just love it. So do I, I think I can still sing this song by heart (give or take a few missed lines)...

    The 10 cent candle is beautiful, and Randy Alcorn's tweet is worth passing on to many others.

    Have a great week ahead of you!

    Blessings

  8. I am not familiar with that song, but its message is timeless...shining for our Jesus in a dark world!

    (Your comment on my blog put a smile on my face. I was imagining your horror at the two little ones catching that cricket...as you sat there calmly!!)

  9. Rebecca, I so remember this hymn as child too. Thank you for sharing and the words are so true. We as Christians should shine like lights in this world of darkness and thankfully we have our dear Lord to help us and strengthen us to do so.
    Thank you for sharing and for your lovely welcome.
    Love
    Jeanie xx
