Child Dedication Sunday

A Prayer of Dedication
(adapted from a prayer by Matt Tullos)

Lord, these tiny feet are so trusting. They are so innocent.  And yet they will walk in a world that has been tainted by hatred, greed, sin, and darkness. Lord protect this child.  We give her to You.

The future seems so uncertain--and yet we look at this child  and mysteriously, we have hope!  Guide her way, Lord.  Make her path straight and give her strength.  We give this precious little one to You.

As parents, grandparents, spiritual leaders, teachers, mentors, and friends, please anoint us to give her an overwhelming sense of security that can only come from You.    We want her to see You in every aspect of our lives.  We give ourselves to You.

When she is hurting, help us minister to her through Your power.  When she fails, may we offer the same grace that You offered to us.

When she is lonely, may we reach out to her and commune with her...and remind her that You will never leave us nor forsake us.

You are Jehovah Shama—the God who is present. When her body and mind are attacked by illness or disease, may she look to You.

You are Jehovah Rapha—the Lord who heals.

When she experiences defeat may she look to You, Jehovah Nissi.  You are our victory.

When she is needy and poor, may she reach out to us and reach to You. You are Jehovah Jireh—The Lord, our Provider.

When she is lost, and she feels she don’t have a purpose, guide her. You are Jehovah Rohi—The Lord our shepherd. We give this little lamb to You. This is our prayer for her:

Be her Shepherd, that she will not be left in need. Lord, make her to lie down in green pastures. May You lead her beside the still waters and restore her soul.. Lead her into paths of righteousness for Your Name’s sake. Yes, even though she will walk through the valley of the shadow of death, let her fear no evil for You are with her. May your rod and your staff comfort her.  Prepare a table before her in the presence of her enemies. May You anoint her head with oil. Let her cup run over!  May goodness and mercy follow her all the days of her life and bring her to dwell in the house of the Lord forever. Amen.

  5. Oh! How I love this! It seems not many churches (at least not where I am) have Child Dedications anymore! What a beautiful prayer for the child and a charge for each member in the family of God to share in this awesome responsibility ~ love one another!
