Calling All Poets! Calling All Creation!

O WORSHIP THE KING
Text: Robert Grant, 1779-1838
Music: Attr. to Johann Michael Haydn, 1737-1806)

1.                 O worship the King, all glorious above,
                    O gratefully sing God's power and God's love;
                    our Shield and Defender, the Ancient of Days,
                    pavilioned in splendor, and girded with praise.

2.                 O tell of God's might, O sing of God's grace,
                    whose robe is the light, whose canopy space,
                    whose chariots of wrath the deep thunderclouds form,
                    and dark is God's path on the wings of the storm.

3.                 The earth with its store of wonders untold,
                    Almighty, thy power hath founded of old;
                    hath stablished it fast by a changeless decree,
                    and round it hath cast, like a mantle, the sea.

4.                 Thy bountiful care, what tongue can recite?
                    It breathes in the air, it shines in the light;
                    it streams from the hills, it descends to the plain,
                    and sweetly distills in the dew and the rain.

5.                 Frail children of dust, and feeble as frail,
                    in thee do we trust, nor find thee to fail;
                    thy mercies how tender, how firm to the end,
                    our Maker, Defender, Redeemer, and Friend.

Calling all poets! Calling all creation! How many metaphors of God's Person and protection and provision can you find in this song? O for a thousand tongues to sing my Great Redeemer's praise!

  1. I found 19 metaphors - and then I stopped! I plan to think about them this afternoon. I didn't realize how many "picture" of God there were here. Many of them straight from His Word!

  2. I may not be a very good poet after all; I think I counted 24 metaphors about our God. I'm guessing I may have missed a couple. At any rate, what a great anthem to use to reflect on the blessings and provisions of our God!
