Self- Made?

The “Self Made Man” is an original sculpture by Colorado artist, Bobbie Carlyle. An organization known as Funding Freedom adopted the “Self Made Man” as its symbol of self-reliance and the freedom philosophy. The organizations says that the “Self Made Man,” chiseling himself out of a solid block of rock, captures the essence of the freedom philosophy – that left to his own devices, man will use his God-given talents to be creative, productive, and prosperous. Using free will, he will better his own situation and that of those around him, thereby influencing in a positive way his own destiny. (I - Rebecca - question that people "left to their own devices" will choose good.  This disagrees with God's Word on the subject.  That is another post.)

Remember, you are constantly in the act of creating yourself. You are in every moment deciding who and what you are. You decide this largely through the choices you make regarding who and what you feel passionate about. ~Neale Donald Walsch

I like this quote.  It makes me think, and I like to think.  I agree with parts of it.  I AM every moment deciding who and what I am.  I DO decide through the choices I make.  In that sense, I am constantly in the act of creating myself.

Here, however,  is where I part company with the thought.  I was created by God who "knit me together in my mother's womb."  It was also He who re-created me (II Corinthians 5:17)!  That is why I want to be passionate about HIM!  I want this - and only this passion to influence my choices about what I wear, the food I eat, the words I speak and write, my family relationships, my home and garden, and the use of my time and energies.

  1. Oh, but you don't part company with that quote at all, Rebecca.
Neale Donald Walsch said, "...You decide this largely through the choices you make regarding who and what you feel passionate about."
And you feel passionate about God, so you do make your choices based on your Passion.

I think this quote is right on.
We can all profess to have a passion about our Faith in God, and wanting to live a life that is Faith-based, but our choices and our actions show our true passions.
We can say that we are forgiving of others, but if we adopt a 'tit for tat' attitude towards others, that's not very forgiving, and that's not showing a passion for Our Lord.

I like the idea of breaking down to choices, and to think of those choices in moments of time. What am I passionate about at this very moment? That might help me to make the right choices.

I'm not deep and I'm not good at 'looking at the big picture', so simplifying in this way is very helpful to me.

    GREAT POST!
    All the best,
    Eileen

  2. I wish everyone in the world had this same passion...what a better place it would be. I shiver to think what i would be doing if the Lord had not called my name.

  3. Wow Rebecca this was a lot for me to absorb! Not surprising knowing me! I do agree with you in so far as I don't think that everyone, when left to their own devises, would choose good.
I do admire your constant diligence in the way you live your life. Forever striving to please our Lord.
But it is not as easy for some. Myself included. It is a constant struggle for me to consistently worry " Am I doing the right thing?" So I do the best that I can. And I believe that God knows that I am not perfect and loves me anyway. Now this doesn't give me an excuse to go crazy! I believe that guilt is our own punishment, as Jesus died on the cross for our sins so that we may have everlasting life.

P.S. You overloaded my brain today, that could be dangerous!

  5. I totally agree. I enjoy doing things with my hands. I enjoy the talents that I have...but I must always remember that these talents are not born out of thin air. No, they are gifts from Our Creator to glorify HIM!

    Great post dear friend!

  6. Becoming who you were meant to be takes a lifetime doesn't it. I too love to think and learn...I try to instill in my g/children to "try" to make good "choices" in everything in life.

  7. Dear friends, ALL of you - You can see that I don't take everything that sounds inspiration at face value. My questioning sometimes gets me in trouble; is too intimidating, I think.

I wasn't trying to convert anyone to my way of thinking - only expressing my reaction to this quote that I read on someone else's sidebar. It made me think. I said, "I WANT to be pawssionate about Jesus...." not that I always am! But that IS my desire.

Thanks for challenging me and sticking with me! You all are God's gifts to me.
