Are You Getting "Wary" in Doing Good?

Cagey like a fox
A few days ago, spell check let "wary" pass for "weary" in a post I did for my Power, Love and Self-Control blog. I didn't catch it myself until later. I decided to let it stand and do a little dictionary work.

As it turns out, "wary" has a GOOD side and a NEGATIVE one. It can mean watchful, careful, alert, vigilant, heedful--all of which are good. Whether in health habits, speech, actions or anything related to life and godliness, in this sense we should all be "wary". (See I Peter 5:8!)

However, it can also mean skeptical, openly distrustful, guarded, unwilling to confide, cagey. In THIS sense, we should NOT become "wary" in doing good. In fact, I think "wariness" might contribute to "weariness"! At any rate, it bears repeating:
Let us not become weary in doing good,
for at the proper time
we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.
Galatians 6:9
Hmmmm. That "proper time" business jumped out at me this time! Now I'll have to think THAT one over...

  1. I actually think both words do apply here. "Let us not become weary in doing good..." and also, "Let us not become wary in doing good..." I notice especially where we live you do become so WARY of the 'stranger in need'. How many times does the same man/woman/boy/girl 'forget' their metro cards or 'lose' their wallet/purse, or get 'mugged' and need just a few dollars to get home? Now, obviously if this same person is continuing this scam they are in need of some kind of help, but is my few dollars really the help they need?
I notice I have developed a very 'wary' very 'skeptical' heart. I'd like to take each person and each situation at face-value, but I also think that if I do I am being very foolish.
This post (and your typo) has given me something to ponder.
As just the 'weariness' too of seeing so many people looking for hand-outs is almost turning my heart to stone sometimes. I don't just pass them by, but after reaching into my pocket corner after corner, I don't always do the generous act with a generous heart. It actually becomes an act of 'obligation' and not kindness of heart at all.
And I can see why people who live and work among this situation learn to turn a blind eye to it. Sad how these poor people become 'part of the scenery'.
This is an on-going debate in our family. Where do you draw the line? When is 'enough' really 'enough'? All we really need is a roof over our heads, clothes on our backs, and food in our stomachs. Shouldn't ALL the rest be given to charity?
    Thought-provoking post, Rebecca.
