Vocation

1. a particular occupation, business, or profession; calling.
2. a strong impulse or inclination to follow a particular activity or career.
3. a divine call to God's service or to the Christian life.
4. a function or station in life to which one is called by God

...an occupation, calling, impulse, inclination, function, station in life...

Never have I been so confident of my vocation as I am at this (late) stage of my life.  Temporary though it may be, it consists of time spent with my mother in the care center in which she resides.  Four to five days a week.  Usually from about 2:00 in the afternoon through dinner time.  This past week our time together included cutting her hair (a bit out of my comfort zone),  slow wheeled "walks" through the corridors, playing the organ ("My Grandfather's Clock" is one of my current favorites), watching 30 minutes or so of HGTV together, and passing time whispering nonsensically back and forth.  My husband, recently retired, frequently accompanies me.  On those days, we begin the afternoon playing dominoes with my father who eats the noon meal with her.  Then the men often wander to the pool table in an adjacent building.  Usually those days find us going out to eat with my father or sharing dinner at his table followed by a card game or two.

I am happy and blessed in this vocation.

  1. It was nice to get up and read about your contentment with the present stage of your life. I have no idea at all what my vocation is at the moment or why I am here. Just trying to breathe and wait for direction.

    1. Actually, I continue to do both of those (trying to breathe and waiting for direction) while exercising my vocation :)

Praying direction comes soon for you, Claudia. And DO keep breathing!

  4. I'm going to answer this in a blog post, possibly tomorrow. It's given me thoughts about my own vocation in life. Your Mom is such a pretty Lady. And, you're a beautiful daughter...earthly and heavenly. Thanks so much for all your encouragement.

    1. Dear Janette, as you can imagine, the concept of "vocation" has added a dimension to my life that I never expected! Glad I expressed it (however incompletely) in this post! God bless YOU!

  6. Dearest Rebecca ~ My life has been tossed about in many storms in the past few years and I've continually fought to "find my way, my purpose." Today, I popped in to read your latest blog post, after finding the title intriguing... The Lord blessed my heart and opened my eyes to see that He recently gave me a 'vocation.'

My Dad passed away at the end of October and my Mom has been going through the mountains of paperwork and communicated to me that she desired to remain in their home near the ocean (2 hours away from where my husband and I live). We fully support her decision and have helped out when we're able. The Lord has been speaking much to us through this Lenten season, and as we began to move forward, He revealed that I had a task to complete prior to doing so.... Paint the entire interior of Mom's home (1700 sq ft double wide mobile home), spend time with her as we both work through grief and focus on Him instead of our path ahead. I'll be spending 3 nights & 3 days per week at Mom's for the next several months. A challenge for me, as my husband still works full time and we "do life" together and being separated is not something we've lived with before. And yet, after returning home last night and now reading your post, I see that God has given me a "vocation" that He desires I commit myself fully to. A whole new way of looking at my life! Words cannot express the gratitude I have for what you've shared. Abundant blessings of great joy to you!

    1. Isn't God's timing interesting? SO happy you can view your venture as SO much more than that! It IS your vocation.

  7. This post really hit home to me. I think we are about the same at ( I'll be 67 this summer) and have never been sure of my vocation except when I was raising my children. After a Major life upheaval 2 1/2 years ago I find myself living alone although near my oldest daughter and I have absolutely no idea what my vocation is and that is okay. I live each day as it unfolds before me trusting that He has a plan for that day and I am in the middle of that plan. Thanks for sharing your heart. (And, BTW, the haircut is very cute!)

  8. Precious vocation..
Mine at present...wife, mother babysitter, waitress, sister, daughter, mother in law, friend...I miss having my mother in law live close to us. (now she lives in a granny flat with her daughter. Somehow when she was here and I was the one she leaned on more for the day to day I found it was a fulfilling role.. God bless you.

    1. Sounds like your life is full! :)
Finding peace and contentment where we are doing it in Jesus' Name make even the smallest deed "significant", I think....
