"I heard a lecture recently in which the speaker talked about goals, and how powerful they
are. He did say, however, that we shouldn’t share our goals, if
possible. In fact, if you shared your resolution in public, you’re
already at a disadvantage. When you share a goal publicly, your brain
enjoys the sharing in the same way it enjoys the achievement itself, and
you’ve lost some of your motivation. This surprised me, but it also
made sense." (Donald Miller, here)
It makes some sense to me, too.
Of course, there probably are examples of times
that sharing a goal or resolution helped a person achieve them.
Well, anyway, I'm feeling a little better (at least temporarily).
I just couldn't get myself around to formulating lists/resolutions/goals/words for 2014.
Maybe because I was having too much fun seeing everyone elses!
I MAY spend this snow day getting around to it,
but don't expect me to post them here.
At least not this year.

I think telling people just adds another level of stress. There is enough stress when we take on a resolution and try to reach a goal that is difficult. Take care.
ReplyDeleteGrowth...spiritually . A continued process.
ReplyDeleteOh, gosh, I don't have a word either, Rebecca! Thank you for visiting. We will stay safe and hunkered down during our storm. It is the frigid temps that bother me more than anything, thinking about all of the people and animals who don't have shelter. My 20-something daughter returned from her first Indiana business trip last month and all she did was rave about the people she met during her stay. She said they were the nicest people she's ever come across :) A very Happy 2014 to you!

I saw a quote that impressed me.....just choose the four most important things in your life that you need to work on, do better, start up, make right. It helped me narrow things down to what is truly important in my life. In the past, I may have made a *resolution* that was something I should be doing in general, and writing it down just added to the long list of things I need to do. I'm happy with my list and my goals this year....,my word is *four*.
ReplyDeleteFour? Now THAT is interesting. I'm curious! (No. "Curious" is not my word.)
DeleteSometimes, it is easier to keep a goal/resolution if one shares it with others.
ReplyDeleteI kept one of my resolutions from last year: I resolved to not drink a carbonated beverage for a year.
It was hard. Extremely. But, I did it.
I haven't made any hard and fast resolutions for 2014 (yet.) Still thinking about them...
Smiles,
Jackie
Good for YOU, Jackie! My husband quit Cola cold turkey a few years ago. I've never struggled with that one--but plenty of others!
DeleteHey, would you let me know if you get this reply? I've never figured out exactly how to be sure that happens. Thanks. And Happy New Year!
Have a blessed 2014, Rebecca!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Lori!
