Happy Birthday, Mr. President

Sir, my concern is not whether God is on our side;
my greatest concern is to be on God's side, for God is always right.  (Abraham Lincoln)

Seeing this quote by this man (whose birthday seems to me to have been lumped with a bunch of others and swept into the dustpan of history somehow) made me think of an old gospel song...Do you know it? Its language is a bit archaic, but its message is timeless! "By His call of mercy and grace divine, we are His!

Who Is On The Lord's Side?

Who is on the Lord’s side?
Who will serve the King?
Who will be His helpers, other lives to bring?
Who will leave the world’s side?
Who will face the foe?
Who is on the Lord’s side? Who for Him will go?
By Thy call of mercy, by Thy grace divine,
 We are on the Lord’s side—Savior, we are Thine!

 Not for weight of glory,
 nor for crown and palm,
Enter we the army, raise the warrior psalm;
But for love that claimeth lives for whom He died:
He whom Jesus nameth must be on His side.
 By Thy love constraining, by Thy grace divine,
We are on the Lord’s side—Savior, we are Thine!

Jesus, Thou hast bought us,
not with gold or gem,
But with Thine own life blood, for Thy diadem;
With Thy blessing filling each who comes to Thee,
Thou hast made us willing, Thou hast made us free.
 By Thy grand redemption, by Thy grace divine,
We are on the Lord’s side—Savior, we are Thine!

Fierce may be the conflict,
strong may be the foe,
But the King’s own army none can overthrow;
’Round His standard ranging, victory is secure,
For His truth unchanging makes the triumph sure.
Joyfully enlisting, by Thy grace divine,
We are on the Lord’s side—Savior, we are Thine!

 Chosen to be soldiers, in an alien land,
Chosen, called, and faithful, for our Captain’s band,
In the service royal, let us not grow cold;
Let us be right loyal, noble, true and bold.
Master, Thou wilt keep us, by Thy grace divine,
Always on the Lord’s side—Savior, always Thine!
(Frances Havergal, 1877)

  1. Great words!

    I believe that Lincoln may have come to the Lord late in his life.

  2. Amelia just finished reading a story this very morning about Abraham Lincoln! Were you able to see the movie "Lincoln" at the theater? Such a wonderful "watch".

    Yes, on the Lord's side today. I'm standing at attention and ready to serve.

  3. Haven't seen the movie yet but I want to. My husband and I were just talking the other day about Lincoln's birthday being lumped together with Washington's and now they call it President's Day or something.
    I am not familiar with this hymn but the lyrics are wonderful.

  5. Happy Birthday to that wonderful, Christian founding Father..we need a President like that RIGHT NOW, before it's to late for dear USA. God bless America. Thank you sweet lady for your kind visit to see my cloche collection. I haven't counted how many cloches I have, as I have broken a couple in the past three years, lol.. I like them so much, that C'mas 2011 I got 2 big ones from my daughter..she knew I would like her present better than the cloths ones, lol...Have a blessed week.

  6. Amen Rebecca,
    That is exactly what is important is who's side we are on. Haven't heard that song in a long time, but always loved it.
    Yea, we sure could use some great christian men like that in our government today, they are out there but just seems like they can't get voted in.....
    just don't know what people are thinking.........they just aren't!! or so
    it seems. course, I always say, NO GOD, NO WISDOM!! think that is the real problem.
    Hope you are doing well hon.
    Blessings, Nellie

  8. I love that hymn!

    I also love the passage of scripture in which Joshua asked the man with the sword, “Are You for us or for our adversaries?” And the man (who was really the Captain of the Lord of Hosts) said "No."

    "No"...meaning He was neither for nor against the earthly armies. It only mattered whether they were on HIS side! He is the standard!

    The words that Lincoln said were true.
