Candyless

One "hug" per person at our luncheon yesterday
After Christmas 2011, I wrote the following on my Power, Love and Self-Control blog:
  • Just because the mini Hershey bars are 1/2 off, doesn't mean I have to buy them.
  • Just because I bought them doesn't mean I have to eat them all in one night.
  • Just because they're still 1/2 price and they're just about gone doesn't mean I have to go back and buy some more.

I have a feeling I might need the reminder in the middle of next week.
My strategy is to heed the FIRST one so I don't have to fall back on the last two!
I'm attempting to keep my Valentine celebrations candy-less this year.
I treated myself to a bare island (kitchen)
and clean, uncluttered counter-tops yesterday.
Better than candy ANY day.

  1. My post today might help you with this. Even at half off they are not a bargain if we consider the true cost to our emotions and our goals. Why buy things that are going to make things more difficult for us? Leave them at the store. If you have already bought them throw them out I say. Be well.

    1. I KNOW, Myra! That's why I said I plan to heed the FIRST one and not bring them into the house just because they're 1/2 price :) (I WILL check out your post. You are always inspiring.)

  2. Morning Rebecca,
Your stratedgy is a good one. I find that if I fight off the temptation at the store life is much easier. Course, I have found that if I buy dark chocolate it seems to satisfy my sweet tooth without making me go crazy.
I had to learn to like it tho, cause I didn't really like it before and now it's funny after eating dark choc for so long now, over 6 yrs., I know longer like milk chocolate. Dark chocolate in moderation is really good for you too, it is good for your heart because of all the antioxidants it has, but I can only eat my chocolate with nuts, but nuts are also heart healthy, so it is a win/win situation. But only a couple of small pcs. a day.

Yea, those half price sales can really get us in trouble sometimes!! lol

Blessings for a delightful Valentines day hon,
    Nellie

  4. Oh, I forgot about Valentine's Day! I'll have to ask Ray and the kids to please not buy me any candy (I'm going to miss my chocolate covered cherries)! I wish I could go candyless in this house! But the girls are always bringing it in, and we are always having company so of course there is lots of desserts to tempt me constantly.
So far, my cravings for candy and 'junk' food have stayed at bay (three weeks now!). I hope it stays that way because I am such a weakling!

Good for you, Rebecca! Stay strong!
    Love and Prayers,
    Eileen

  6. Milk chocolate is not healthy but dark chocolate, especially 70% cocoa
is said to be good for us. It even relaxes the arteries and is heart-healthy. I buy one large Lindt bar each week and just have a nibble here and there throughout. It satisfies like a rich dessert. Besides, the more you deprive yourself of something you want, the more you will want it. That's a fact. When we've got even the docs telling us to enjoy dark chocolate, why not have a bite.

    1. I admire your restraint, Sandy. If I was sure a Lindt bar would last a week, I'd not hesitate to buy one - even at FULL price!

I truly believe that there are a few of us for whom sugar is a "trigger" food and functions in a similar way to alcohol for an alcoholic. (Not sure of that. It just seems to be my personal experience.)

  9. Uh oh ... you've seen MY candy drawer! I wish my "bargain" hunting was limited to candy :)

  10. My 'bestest favorites' are Dove Dark chocolates. The serving size is 5 pieces AND my cardiologist said not to deprive myself. I'm allowed DARK chocolate, but not milk chocolate. YUM! Oh, and they even have a 'secret' message printed on the inside wrapper!

  11. I purchase one large Hershey Special Dark bar a week. I have a couple of pieces of it each night. Just let it melt in my mouth. Love Dark Chocolate!!! Like Tamara I like the Dove Dark Chocolate too but the large Hershey bar is a bit cheaper. Love Di ♥

  12. Oh, my...where do I even start? I love chocolate...love it. So, I try not to keep any in the house to tempt me. Dark chocolate is the BEST, without a doubt.

I admire Sandy and Diana and their ability to use self-control. Way to go, ladies! I'd eat one of those candy bars in a day, not a week! :-)

P.S. I agree with your theory about sugar being a trigger food, similar to alcohol with an alcoholic!
