Jesus Wept....Did He Laugh, Too?

As (Jesus) approached Jerusalem and saw the city, he wept over it and said, "If you, even you had only known on this day what would bring you peace--but now it is hidden from your eyes...you did not recognize the time of God's coming to you."

As I read and thought about these words of Jesus from Luke 19:42-44, I thought about Jesus weeping.  Not too long before this event, he wept as he ministered to Mary and Martha who were mourning the death of their brother Lazarus.

Then I wondered to myself, "Why does the Bible never record Jesus laughing?"   I'm sure He must have!  His disciples said some pretty funny things!  And Jesus certainly showed a sense of humor in how He cagily answered  His critics.  But I wonder if He ever just let out a big belly laugh--like I did this past week when one of my friends hit a wrong button on facebook while confirming a friend and went on record as being MARRIED to her friend!

I guess one day I won't wonder any more.  Until then, I may have to content myself with looking at man-made pictures of Jesus laughing such as can be seen here....  Meanwhile, I can be thoughtful and careful to "recognize" the time of God's coming to ME.  His still, small voice...His generous grace..His gentle and loving commands.  Missing these STILL grieves the heart of Jesus!

  2. Jesus is the author of pure joy. How can
one have joy without laughter, or at
least a big smile? Since He created all
of our emotions and we are made in His
image, He had to be (I believe) a very
joyful Man. I know the Bible calls Him
a Man of Sorrows, but I believe He also
had great happiness and times which
    brought Him to laughter.

  4. I remember my pastor giving us several examples of Jesus' sense of humor. I didn't commit them to memory but I figure that he has to have a great sense of humor to deal with me!
