I'M EATING!

My husband and I read a chapter of a devotional book together most mornings.  We're currently reading "The Heart of Praise" by Jack Hayford.  This morning, there was a nugget SO precious I couldn't help but copy it here.

When you come to the end of yet another day that has drained your physical and emotional and spiritual strength,
sit down and read the Word of God.
If you can’t stay awake,  stand up and read it aloud.
“But Jack, that’s the very time I don’t feel like reading the Bible.
And besides, I never remember what I read."
Dear one, you’re not training for a Bible quiz—you’re eating.
I don’t remember what I ate last Thursday,
but it did my body good.
I may not always remember brilliant flashes of insight
which light up the dark recesses of my spirit,
but my spirit is being fed by the Holy Spirit—
who is both the Ever-present Comforter,
and the Source of the Word of God (see John 16:13).

I like that!  "I'm not training for a Bible quiz--I'm EATING!".

  1. I KNOW those days and I also KNOW eating
His Word does work wonders! I enjoy Jack
Hayford's teachings so I need to look for
    that devotional. "Manifest Presence" is
    an excellent work of his.

  2. What a marvelous way of thinking about reading the bible! I am just the opposite however. I like to read it while in bed because it sticks better for me. I think because there are no distractions and I can really focus on the word.

  4. Yes, our souls are fed, even if our minds don't know it yet. I love how he states it.

  7. I'm going through one of those emotionally draining times, and feasting on the Word of God truly is my strength. Sometimes it does just feel like reading words and promptly forgetting them...Thank you for reminding me that I don't always have to have those brillient flashes of insight but that I can rest assured that I am being strengthened in the inner (wo)man.
