HAITI -- WHAT CAN WE DO?

MCC (Mennonite Central Committee)  is responding to the devastation of the earthquake in Haiti by sending 20,000 relief kits, 10,000 heavy comforters and 10,000 flat sheets. You can find specifics for the products for each kit and specifications for comforters and sheets by clicking HERE.  Sheets will be used as bedding and mosquito netting.  The kits consist of practical hygienic items.

People in our small church signed up to purchase items for one kit.  It was a joy to contribute in this small way and complete this kit yesterday morning.  Today we will deliver our kit to a drop off site nearby.

Jesus said, "I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me...I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me."  (Matthew 25: 34-40).

  1. My bible study group put together kits like this and sent them to some organization similar to the MCC. I never thought about sheets and will pass this information along at tonights study.

  2. The way various groups have responded is really encouraging. As you know, Lynn and I were supposed to be leaving in a few weeks to go to Haiti, but the trip has been postponed.

I am also encouraged by the strong spirit and resiliency of the Haitian people.

  3. Well we are on the same wave length today, Rebecca. Have a look at my post when you get a chance. It doesn't matter if your church is large or small or if your gift is large or small. When we give sacrificially out of our substance rather than out of our excess, I think that is when we can really begin to love the way Jesus loves. There are many millionaires in the world, and many of them do respond to these needs. But I'll guess it is the many many ordinary people who give from the heart that are truly the blessed. Like the folks in your small church or the ladies in Dee's bible study, and the short term mission team from our church who raise their own support to go. God bless them all!

  4. Rebecca, I had money saved to have my downstairs painted this Spring....instead I gave the money to the Red Cross to help those in Haiti.....not much really but all I could afford.....I also think prayers offered up are even better than money. These poor people have nothing and I am heartbroken for them....Hugs

  5. This is the end of the age...and we who are more fortunate are constantly being challenged to move out of our comfort zones.

Praise God for the timely response of many all over the world. As Christians I believe we can do so much more than what the rest of mankind can.

Thank you for this post, Rebecca. Your question tugs at my heart - "What can we do?" Anything we do in the face of such enormous needs never seems enough!

    Love
