Siblings and Cemeteries

It may seem like a strange way to spend an hour, but after a lovely dinner together, my siblings (and their spouses) and our mother and father went to the cemetery to see their grave stone.  We children had not been there before.

It was good to be together here.  My parents have made most of the arrangements for their deaths, funerals, and burial.  It is a blessing to be a part of this family and watch them as the prepare for their Heavenly Home.

Jesus died for us "so that, whether we are awake (alive) or asleep (dead), we may live together with him.  Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing."  I Thessalonians 5:10-11

  1. Rebecca....I love these photos. They show that they know that this Earth is only a temportay place for believers before reaching our true eternal home. Wonderful for them!!!!
We have our headstones....Mama, Daddy, my sister, myself, my sister's husband, and my husband's... all together in one plot at Mama and Daddy's church....side by side.
Daddy did that for all of us.....bought them...had them engraved with our names and dates of birth....and they are beautiful. I have always wanted to go and photograph them. Now, I'm going to do it. Thank you for posting this... I know what I'm going to photograh next!! :))
I adore your parents' photos here....I smile from the depth of my heart....and can't wait to see them in heaven. What a wonderful family we have. Love to you!!!

  2. So special to get your comment tonight, Jackie. I sit here reflecting on the day and sharing YOUR cemetery story. What a beautiful gift your Daddy gave you all. It is SO comforting to know we will be gathered one day with the Lord Jesus in Heaven. I'm so thankful you share this "blessed hope" with me!

  3. Rebecca, I smiled as I read your post, and viewed your pictures....When my husband passed I arranged for my funeral, the plot beside him, my name is on the headstone, only my death date has to be added. I did this so that those I loved wouldn't have too...when visiting his grave with my children many years ago I asked them to take a picture as in before and after, I thought it was funny but they were slightly annoyed with me. I am sure when the time does come my family will be pleased that these arrangements are made. Knowing that we will all be together in heaven brings great comfort to me......:-) Hugs

  5. It's not odd at all Rebecca, we sometimes visit our plots in our home town cemetery...Husband's parents rest there now... My mother planned her funeral right down to the music...it was a blessing to us to have that time to concentrate on creating a meaningful tribute to her...where she and daddy are buried(Cincinnati Spring Grove Cemetery) well it's almost like a national park...so peaceful to visit.

  7. I love this post...death is not to be feared for those who have Christ as their savior..but something to be ready for!
After my Dad passed away, I felt undone. He knew Christ, but I did miss him so much. One day after leaving the small cemetary, I noticed a headstone on the way out. It said, "absent from the body, present with the Lord..and Happy!". From that day forward, my grief was replaced with joy! My Dad is happy and whole!

  8. I think this is wonderful Rebecca. It brings peace of mind to know that all of the arrangements have been made. I worked in a funeral home for a few years and it really did help people to know that everything was planned as they liked and that their families would not have to worry about the arrangements.

  9. I actually love to visit cemeteries. Sometimes I go wandering around and looking at the various headstones and inscriptions and try to imagine the lives of the people. I especially love to visit OLD cemeteries. Perhaps it just reminds me that our earthly lives are fleeting, and how I need to accept each moment as a gift. When my dad passed into glory last year, my mom purchased a lovely double headstone for their graves. It was a huge financial sacrifice for her, and a wonderful gift to us children. When visiting graves of loved ones who died in Christ, I am reminded that this is not their final resting place, and they lie there just awaiting their own resurrection. It's a very peaceful and comforting thought!
