Then and Now -- Galatia and Melrose Place

I've never, EVER watched Melrose Place. From the little I've heard of it, I picture it to be a half hour of drama, confusion, and careless living.

My husband is preaching a series of sermons on the book of Galatians. Galatians is actually a letter--written by the Apostle Paul to new Christians living in Galatia almost 2000 years ago. Those rather naive Christians had become confused and careless. The letter contains passionate and heated language as the apostle tried to convince them to return from the brink of spiritual disaster to spiritual sanity.

This morning, he will be concentrating on chapter 4 of Galatians. It is particularly appropriate for Christians today who in their naivety have become confused and careless; whose lives have become complicated and dramatic due to confused and careless decisions! With impassioned concern Paul urged them (and us) to: Receive the Father's Affection, Reject "Old-Time" Religion (i.e. the one that says, "Be good enough to please God"), and Return to Your First Love.

After the drama, confusion and carelessness all around us, doesn't a simple, peaceful and carefree life sound inviting? I want to hear--REALLY hear--the Word of God to me this morning. I want to receive, reject, and return to simplicity, peace and sanity at all levels.

  2. Oh Rebecca you have no idea how many times I have prayed for a simpler life. Not just for me but society in general. It has always been my thought that technology will be the downfall of our society as we know it! And here we are visiting via technology! It is so difficult raising Katie in this world today. It is why I do watch shows that are less than clean or pleasing for me. I use it as an opportunity to converse with her and try to explain why we shouldn't just do things because everyone else is! But it is difficult. I don't believe in locking her in her room for thirty years as my husband would like! I want to send her out into this world as armed as she can be with good morals and a strong spiritual belief. A rough, rough job today Rebecca. So we just keep praying for the energy and strength to help us through these next few critical years!

  3. I've never seen Melrose Place either, I think it was a slightly 'older' version of 90210 (I could have the wrong title/zip code) or whatever that teenage show was called, it was about life in Beverly Hills. I think some people not only invite drama into their lives, I think they thrive on it for the most part.
And not just the West Coast either.
I think as you age and grow a little wiser you find that simplifying is very emancipating. And I think sometimes for some people, having all that drama in their lives finally awakens a need for a deeper relationship with God, or as you put it, a need to return themselves from the brink of spiritual disaster to spiritual sanity!
It looks like man (woman) has been pretty much the same for generations and generations!
    Nice post!
    All the best,
    Eileen

  5. A simplier life would be so refreshing, it is a challenge today to become less wordly and make God our best friend.....I believe it can be done as with God all things are possible. Have a wonderful Sunday and I do hope you are feeling better........:-) Hugs

  6. Here I am, finally...'life' has been keeping me busy.

My post for today kind of reflects all of this too, that we can get off track and forget that it is all about doing all the good we can and forgetting self long enough to do that for others.

Though I don't (and haven't for years now) watch television, I do watch alot of movies and I make sure that I comment on what they lack or what they portray that is not in accord with God's ways...it keeps me where I should be in my journey as well as making Michael (still a relatively new Christian) aware.

    blessings and hugs,

    marcy
