Open My Eyes, That I May See

Our friend mentioned in Monday's post gently corrected/enlightened me...

Darren is actually a Guiding Eyes dog. When a dog is a guide, he is generically called a "guide dog." However, there are various schools that train guide dogs. The very first school in the U.S. was/is called Seeing Eye, which is why people often say there is a "Seeing Eye dog." Or, if the dog is from Leader Dogs for the Blind, we would say , "There is a Leader dog." Darren is actually from Guiding Eyes for the Blind, which makes him a "Guiding Eyes dog." Or, any guide dog can just be called a guide dog.

Who knew? I have so much to learn. (Actually, I WAS familiar with the various terms--just unaware of the distinctions.)

I wonder how many distinctions I miss--what levels of understanding I have yet to achieve--as I read God's Word? With the Psalmist (Psalm 119:18) I plead, "Open my eyes, Lord!"

Open My Eyes, That I May See

Open my eyes, that I may see
Glimpses of truth Thou hast for me;
Place in my hands the wonderful key
That shall unclasp and set me free.
Refrain
Silently now I wait for Thee,
Ready my God, Thy will to see,
Open my eyes, illumine me,
Spirit divine!

  1. The older I get, the more I realize how much I've missed--in God's Word and just in life around me. I'm trying now to keep my eyes open. Thanks for the info on dogs. Donna

  2. The other thing I'm realizing is what a GREAT WEALTH of comfort, prayer material, instruction and inspiration I've acquired thanks to the hymns I have learned and memorized simply by repetition! Thank You, LORD, for my rich heritage, the song writers, the church leaders!

  4. And how wonderful when someone has the wisdom and know how to "gently correct/enlighten"!

    The words of hymns are so rich! I have admired for a long time your recall of so many of them--and all of the verses! That is a blessing!

  5. Sometimes I have to look them up - like for the additional verses to If Thou but Suffer God to Guide Thee....but then that wasn't one we sang so much....I think chapels at Moody Bible Institute also reinforced much of my childhood learning. I thank God for THAT blessing, too.
