The Habit of Reading

Because of our (husband & my) daily readings in All Saints,
I have an extensive list of books I want to read.
I requested The Habit of Being from our library, and it has arrived.
While reading, I stop and chuckle frequently. I may NEVER get through it!
It is a collection of Flannery O'Connor's letters to friends, editors, agents, etc.
They are just a HOOT.  Here are some lines, for example:

"I hope you got the pickle recipe.  Regina had never made any such
but got the recipe out of a very dirty old cookbook so it should be alright."
"I am glad you have come to favor chickens.  You won't favor them so much
when you have to clean up their apartment but the eggs are certainly worth it."
"The one I sent looked as if I had just bitten my grandmother and that this was one of my few pleasures, but all the rest were worse."  (about a publicity picture she'd submitted)
"She is still violently interested in finding herself a husband and still asks personal questions without any preparation and at the most inconvenient times.  I do wish somebody would marry the child and shut her up.  I am touched by her but you know what a long way a little goes."

Do you SEE what I mean?
If you need to laugh and don't mind reading a bunch of letters,
I STRONGLY suggest this book.
(Those of you who are writers will REALLY appreciate it!)

The time to read is now, not hereafter. We must make time or miss our joy.

  1. The habit of reading. I like that. I was just rebuked, being told that blogging and reading were lazy...LOL, so this hit home! I love the habit of reading and this sounds great!

  2. I admire Flannery, a unique person. However, I do have a hard time reading her novels...they are supposed to be full of redemption and I don't always see it.

    1. Bookie, I wonder if you might not enjoy this compilation of letters. So far,the ones I read include correspondence with publishing companies and agent, etc. They aren't long, but just incredibly interesting and witty!

  3. Reading has been my tool to learn this English language. It has not been easy, yet, when I read the words, it becomes easy. m.

  4. The Habit Of Being sounds like a great read. I must admit my reading of books has fallen off considerably since i discovered blogging, and I am always telling myself, that i am going to get back to actually holding a book and actually taking time to read it. Thanks for the motivation.

    1. I know what you mean, Sue! I've had to cut back the time I spend reading blogs in order to increase my BOOK time. (Just another example of the difficulty of giving up the "good" for "better" or even "best"....)

    1. Oh, Pamela. I hope you do. And IF you do, I can't wait to know if you laugh as much as I have laughed!

  7. I must admit, that I've only read a bit of Flannery's work, and found it pretty dismal. This looks more fun though. May have to give it a go! Reading is a necessity for me. Can't imagine a life without lots of books!
