Pie

Pie knows no cultural or political boundaries. Pie makes people happy. And happy people make the world a better place. That’s why the world needs more pie." ~ Beth Howard
A Facebook Friend recently posted this quote, a link to Ms. Howard's blog, and word of her new book.
Now let me say right up front that I like to eat pie with the proverbial "Best Of Them".  However, I'm just not a very good pie-baker.  Still, I purchase pie plates of various makes and sizes at bargain prices in thrift store thinking, "Someday I'm going to bake more pies!" Or, "I can bake (So-and-SO) a pie and just give him/her the pie plate, too!"

Two little tart plates

But when I read this quote this morning, my heart was stabbed with the thought of what (WHO actually)  REALLY is meant for sharing, connects people, knows no cultural or political boundaries, and makes people happy

Pie is no substitute for Jesus.

Landon MacDonald recently tweeted, "I hope my tombstone says, BORN. FOUND JESUS. TOLD EVERYONE. DIED."    Me, too.
It's embarrassing, really.  The number of pie tins/plates I have.
I can't remember the last time I baked a pie.
But I'm telling you, "The world DOES need more Jesus!"
And there's a Best Seller written on that subject.

  1. I love pie plates as well. We use them as dinner plates. They work much better. I do not keep things like pies and cakes on hand because I can only be strong for so long and it isn't worth it. Occasionally when eating out I will have some but not often and only then. I can have one serving and leave the rest there! Have a blessed Sunday Rebecca. Are you drinking your water? :-)

    1. Yes I am (drinking my water). What an interesting idea - using pie plates as dinner plates!

  2. I'm the family pie baker...and I do love to make pies and I'm pretty good at it. But yes, the problem is, when I make them I eat too much of them! But I'm rethinking my strategy here after reading the quote we posted. I, too, have several nice pie plates and have a hard time not buying more at the thrift stores for the same reason you stated Rebecca...but I think I will try to do just that. Bake them and give them away, pie plate and all. I am anxious to read her book when it comes out...I read an excerpt on Amazon and her story seems to be one of tragedy and redemption. But you are so right, the best seller of all is the best STORY of all...maybe we can figure out at way to share Jesus AND pie!!

    1. What a great idea - Jesus AND pie. A line that got lost in my post somewhere was that I'm just not a good pie-baker. They just come out strange. Most every time.

  5. I'm not much of a pie-baker either (BUT I do like to eat it!), sometimes in the Fall after we go apple picking then I'll get a hankering to bake apple pies and apple crisps.

I love downsizers idea of using pie plates as dinner dishes! LOVE IT!

    Nice post! Nice quote!

And I love the idea of pie and Jesus too! It reminds me of something else I read, where a woman said she adds Jesus into everything she cooks and bakes, or Jesus helps her cook and bake, and He is in every nook and cranny of her home, or something to that effect. She said she praises Him as she goes about her daily chores, and the two of them take on the tasks together. It was very sweet. I'll have to try and find it again.

    Love and Prayers,
    Eileen

  6. I don't make pies, either. My husband's not a big fan of them, so I just never practiced making them. My mother makes amazing, delicious pies! Her crusts are flaky and delicate. Her peach pie is my absolute favorite. Yummmm...I'm hungry for some pie, now! ;-)

BTW...my hubby uses a pie plate as his dinner plate whenever we have roast beef and gravy. He says it holds the gravy in a lot better. LOL

    Blessings...

  7. No pie is not a substitute for Jesus. I have never been a big pie cooker, even though I have wanted to...maybe the combination of a shared piece of pie with someone while having a conversation about Christ!

  8. The perfect epitaph. It's kind of like stopping now and then to think what people would say if you died tomorrow and they could open all of the closet doors! EEK!! What would they say on my tombstone? Hmmm.

    Blessings, Debbie

  9. Talk about a concise summary..."I hope my tombstone says, BORN. FOUND JESUS. TOLD EVERYONE. DIED."
    That is something to ponder.

  10. Love the epitaph, too! The song "people need the Lord" came to my mind - and it's so true. Pie (and we could replace "pie" with a long list of stuff) is certainly no substitute for Jesus. I'll remember those words!

  11. Love all your pie plates, Rebecca, i enjoy pie more than cake, but am not a great pie maker, always have trouble with the crust. Now for the meat of this post. What an epitaph, it should be on all of ours. Great post and much food for thought.

Wishing you a very Happy Valentine's Day.
    Hugs,

  13. Neat post, Rebecca; we are pie bakers at our house. Pie truly makes people happy, if only temporarily. We recently gave a pie away and it was very much appreciated. Little things like pie can be a good witness--not the same happiness that Jesus brings, but still a good way to open a door to friendship.
