Life and Blogging

HER:  "Hi Rebecca, just having my coffee. How are you? Miss you and the others so much and every day I say I am going to post today but life just gets in the way. I am out of here in an hour as we are driving to a birthday party supper north of here. Have a great day, xo"

ME:  "Sounds like a fun day!  It's quite wet here and raining - maybe up until the weekend. Never think that "life gets in the way" though. Life IS the way"

ME:  "What I mean is it is better to let life get in the way of blogging than blogging in the way of life!"

...so went our facebook exchange yesterday.  It IS possible to let blogging (technology) get in the way of life.  This morning, fueled by the realization of what I'd written yesterday, I got busy and updated our mantel.  It had been on my mental "to do" list for several days.  For more pictures of the result, click on the picture below.

For me, it takes deliberate and frequent evaluation
to be sure that blogging doesn't get in the way of life.
How about you?

  1. Well, when it comes to the actual writing, I find I have to live to have anything to say. But blogging is bigger (as we all know) than writing, and I, too, have to be careful not to let it steal too many moments from my day.

  2. Great point, Brandee ("I have to live to have anything to say...")!

  3. Always...balance is truly the key to life, which is something I struggle with in all areas of my life

  4. Yes, that's true of technology. But lately life got in the way of my blogging! I really was so so busy that I didn't post until last evening after quite a while. We had 5 funerals in 8 days, I worked a 5 day week (unusual for me) and Clint had three jobs most days. Plus it was the week of our county fair! We were extremely swamped with places to be! I wanted to blog and to read others' blogs and just couldn't!

  5. For me it is not the blogging, it is the keeping up with all the lovely blogs I want to read!

    Real life comes first!

  6. Yes, Deanna! "Blogging" for me is 90% keeping up with others and 10% composing my own posts :)

  7. I have to be careful that I don't spend way to much time visiting rather than writing , Rebecca, I would much rather read what others write than my words. Though this past summer had been very busy with all my food preserving. I seem to always stay way behind.

I tried facebook but found that it was more time consuming, and finally deleted my account.
    Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

  8. Such a good word, Rebecca! I am forever evaluating how much time I spend in cyberspace; and in recent weeks it's lessened dramatically. I love visiting bloggers; and I equally enjoy crafting my own posts. But there's a world beneath my nose that includes so many other rich undertakings, and I'm trying to focus more-and-more on them.

  9. Balance, balance, balance. I couldn't imagine
also being on Facebook. I barely have time to
read and write blogs and still live life.
Thanks for sharing the lovely pictures.

  10. As long as I get my post written early in the afternoon I have no problem. It's when I get behind and something unexpected comes up in the evening that there may be trouble. I'm not much of a television watcher but sometimes my husband would rather I stare at the movie screen with him than at the computer screen blogging... those are the times you see some random little post with minimal pics! Hubby first you know.

  11. You know, Rebecca, I have been reading this same subject on some of the other blogs I visit. People are struggling between two worlds. One young Mom (of a disabled little four-year-old girl, and the little girl lives in a nursing home for children) said she was going to stop blogging about her daughter because she found herself looking at their visits together in the mode of 'how will this blog' instead of just enjoying the moments she had with her daughter. She said she found herself looking at her daughter through the lens of a camera more than looking at her with her own eyes. It seemed so important to her though that we see her little girl through her heart (and we did!) so it was hard for her to stop posting about her especially because she knew we all came to love her little girl and we look forward to her progress, we cheered each new step, a venture outdoors, her little girl seeing a playground for the first time, etc.
But I understood exactly what she was talking about. It's hard to find a balance sometimes. I know 'real life' sometimes takes me away from blogging and then I miss my 'blog family' so much. So I do strive to mesh the two worlds.

    Great post!
And I love your Fall mantel! You've inspired me!
Also, many thanks, Rebecca for being such a good friend.
    Love and Prayers,
    Eileen

  12. I love to blog, but sometimes I'm just too busy to slow down and *tell* about it. I guess that's a good thing. If all I had to do was sit in a chair and watch TV, that wouldn't be much to post about, would it? (my radishes and zinnias are popping up for a fall garden)
