Summer Reads

...click on pic for a close-up...
The weather here in northeast Indiana could not be better! Cool mornings, beautiful days, calm evenings, refreshing breezes...

My mind cries out for activity.  My body, hampered by a severe case of poison ivy, balks.  So I've turned to reading.

My favorite authors (Binchy, Trollope, Trigiani, Mayle, etc.)  can't churn 'em out fast enough for me, so I googled to find writers who write in similar veins.

In the Peter Mayle vein, I discovered the two pictured here and finished another, The Reluctant Tuscan:  How I Discovered My Inner Italian, by Phil Doran.  All have been highly entertaining and have helped get my mind off my itching body as I "traveled" to Portugal, Italy and France.

For more serious reading, we've  purchased our own copy of Radical, by David Platt. I'll be reading it after (or maybe alongside of) The Paris Wife by Paul McLain, which is about the love affair between Ernest Hemingway  and his wife, Hadley.

What are YOU reading this summer?
Be as careful of the books you read as of the company you keep,
for your habits and character will be as much influenced by the former as the latter.

  1. I am reading Broken-Down House, Living Productively In A World Gone Bad; by Paul David Tripp. The other book I just finished reading was Heaven is For Real, an interesting little book that is a quick read.

  3. I am reading "Oldest living Confederate Widow Tells All" a novel by Allan Gurganus. It has over 700 pages so I will be rechecking it out from the library soon. I am enjoying it very much.

  4. How wonderful! You almost make me wish that I had Poison Ivy! Just kidding... I know that you are miserable. :(

I'm actually in book 3 of a Lynn Austin series that a friend loaned me. I can't remember the titles but it's her series about King Hezekiah.

    Blessings, Debbie

  5. Love your blog, I'm following you now. Just wanted to comment on "Radical", this is a wonderful book. I've been to two of Platte's secret church studies and am hosting one at my church in August.

  6. That poison ivy needs to go in the name
    of Jesus!
Your books sound interesting. I haven't
had time to pick up a single book besides
my Bible we've been so busy with house
    repairs, painting, and wedding planning.
And most times I read the word online.
It's nice to have so much there to learn
with on Bible Gateway and Bible Study Tools.
    Hope you feel better soon!

  7. I wish you were close enough to stop by the library I work at! I have been shelving books all summer and have only read one, I believe. It's weird, I'm a writer, but I rarely finish a book. I suppose I'm too busy with other things (like writing!). I enjoy books on Biblical subjects or coffee table style books. I'm more likely to just glance through books. Yes, the poison ivy should go in the name of Jesus!

    Be well and itch-free :)

  9. Evening Rebecca,
So sorry to hear you have poison ivy, know that isn't any fun!! Bless your heart!

Sounds like you are having a fun time reading tho so that is at least a very good distraction.
Loved that comment at the bottom on watching what we read, and I might add watch on Tv or movies - That is such truth!

Happy Reading my friend, and thanks for coming

  10. I looked up your books and ohhh they look so good. I'm reading Prayer Partners by August Gold, Encouragement: The Key to Caring by Lawrence J. Crabb, Essentials for Life by Marcia Ford and I picked up Friendship Bread by Darien Gee just because I like the title and book jacket. We'll see if it worth the purchase.

  11. I'm reading Radical, and also thought I should give Love Wins a read, so there's that.

And every night I crawl into bed with a flash light and a biography of Van Gogh. FASCINATING!
